Unique—that’s the term most often used to describe the Brown School, Jefferson Co. Public Schools' only school with elementary, middle, and high school in the same building. Approximately 600 students in Kindergarten through Grade Twelve attend Brown. What makes the school “one of a kind” is its less structured environment, extensive community interactions, cross-age groupings, and diverse student population. No bells or buzzers sound between classes at Brown—a quiet change made to permit flexible scheduling. On any given day, some classes work together on a lesson while others are on an excursion to observe local government. Oftentimes students work in small groups or on individual projects. This informal environment cultivates students’ skills of self-discipline, responsibility, and decision making, ultimately enabling the students to develop self-directed learning styles. We are a community school: we provide a community environment to support individuals’ learning needs; we expect every student, staff member, and parent to contribute concretely and regularly to the greater good; we expect evidence of growth and change in a reasonable amount of time. The Brown also offers an unique school-to-career program.
