“In essentials, Unity; in non-essentials, Liberty; in all things, Charity.”

Originally housed a women's club founded in 1891 by social reformer Caroline Severance, the first female voter in California. The club held meetings at various locations until the completion of their first clubhouse located here. When the building proved inadequate for their needs, a new building was constructed on the site of the old one in 1924.

  • Photo #2: From the LA Public Library website: "Wearing the costume of a cocinera, or cook, Mrs. Harriette Matson is pictured holding an old-fashioned pair of scissors on February 20, 1940. In front of her are cannon used by General Fremont in 1846. Many fine old chests will also be displayed at the Friday Morning Clubhouse." Photo #6: The original clubhouse which stood on this spot until 1924.
