National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska (NPR-A). A 23-million acre (36,000 square miles) area originally established in 1923 as "Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4". Technically recoverable, but undiscovered oil beneath the Federal portion of NPR-A is believed to range between 5.9 and 13.2 billion barrels, with an average, expected, value of 9.3 billion barrels.
