Union Pacific’s Mira Loma Auto Facility is a 256-acre automobile distribution center that is a vital link in the delivery of new vehicles to dealerships in Southern California.
The facility consists of two side tracks to receive and depart trains and 12 tracks to unload vehicles from rail cars. There are ten support tracks that hold up to 256 rail cars, along with several tracks to maintain and repair rail cars outside the facility to the north. Emissions from locomotives used to move rail cars to these tracks are included in the emissions inventory even though the tracks are located outside of the facility. The facility operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Also next to the Mira Loma facility are two main line tracks that handle trains not destine to or from facility.
Eight trains a day originate or terminate at UP’s Mira Loma Auto Facility.
Galena St. parallels most of the south boundary of the triangle-shaped facility, with Etiwanda Ave. paralleling the most of the western boundary and Van Buren Blvd. paralleling most of the northern boundary.
Activities at the Mira Loma Auto Facility include receiving inbound trains, moving rail cars to tracks to unload vehicles, and moving the empty rail cars to tracks for outbound trains. Vehicles unloaded from the rail cars are temporally staged in parking stalls before they are loaded into over-the-road transport trucks destine for area dealerships. Freight cars needing repair are moved to a railcar repair shop next to the vehicle distribution facility. Emissions from the locomotives used to move the rail cars to the repair shop are included in the emissions inventory.
There are two locomotives assigned to work in the facility. These medium-horsepower locomotives are used to move railcars from one track to another, sorting them for vehicle unloading and moving railcars to be put together to assemble a train for departure. High-horsepower long-haul road locomotives bring trains to the facility, are removed from the arriving train and taken to a maintenance facility at another location. High-horsepower locomotives are brought to the facility and connected onto outbound trains.
Vehicles taken away from the facility are moved by over-the-road trucks through a several-lane entrance to the Mira Loma Auto Facility. At this secure "gate" entrance, a driver’s identity is confirmed and all necessary documents are executed.
