A former 19th century ironstone mine. Worked out by the early part of the twentieth century, a new mine was opened three miles away at Grinkle. The area is also known for jet - a solidified, bitumen-like mineral often used for jewellery. Most of the older pre-war houses were former miners' houses - they were built for iron miners, many of whom were local but some were also recruited from as far away as Norfolk.
