Starnes Island was simply a hill in Travis County until the early part of the 1940s when Mansfield Dam was built on the Colorado River
creating Lake Travis. It is located in the Sandy Creek arm of the lake. The island is also know to some as Rattlesnake or Snake Island.

  • This is a bump.
  • In the 1970s, this was known as "Monkey Island". Some guy with a pet chimpanzee took the thing to the lake one day. It got out of the boat when they were at this island and was immediately untrackble in the brush. They never found the monkey.
  • Good anchorage. Lots of party barges regularly visit to chill and swim. Was originally "Rattlesnake Island" as when the lake was first filled the snakes headed for high ground. Now, snake free and has cliff diving, swimming and some scuba diving locations. It's near Volente and the water park. Fourth of July fireworks are launched from the island and its a great show from the h20 or nearby hillsides. While now small with the lake levels high, I give it a thumbs up.
