Elizabeth, New Jersey

City with a population of 120,568 in 2000; fourth largest city in New Jersey. The county seat of Union County. Founded in 1664 by English settlers as Elizabethtown, named after the wife of Sir George Carteret. Served as colonial capital until 1673 when the colony was split in two. In 1855 the city was officially incorporated. Once headquarters of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. The site of the construction of the first US submarines in the late 1800s.

  • not many know in the 50s there were 3 plane crashes here in just literally a couple of months this actually resulted in newark airport being closed for a considerable amount of time the 1st was a c46 the 2nd was an AA CV-240 and the 3rd a national DC-6 theres a book about them written by a resident of elizabeth and a survivor
