2-story building originally completed as a pair of stables in 1843 and 1846 by A. Voorhis. The easternmost structure was was raised to three stories in 1898 by architect Jacob V. Myers and reduced again to two in 1930, when the two buildings were altered and joined together. The front is simply treated in brick with arched doors at the first floor. In 1930, the former Jefferson Livery Stables was reduced to two stories and joined internally with No. 53 by architect William Bayard Willis. The upper floor is smooth-stuccoed and has casement windows with iron flower-box holders.
It was redesigned to serve as a restaurant named Bonnie's Stonewall Inn, and then in 1967 became the Stonewall Inn - a gay tavern and recreational bar after being purchased by the Genovese family of gangsters. It was the site of The Stonewall Riots of 1969, which is widely considered to be the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for gay and lesbian rights in the United States.
The original Stonewall closed in 1969, and the space was occupied by various other establishments, including a bagel sandwich shop, a Chinese restaurant, and a shoe store. In 1990 a bar called Stonewall opened in the western half (53 Christopher Street). This was renovated and returned to its original name, "The Stonewall Inn", in 2007.
On June 23, 2015 the buildings were designated a New York City landmark. It was later designated in 2016 as part of the Stonewall National Monument, making it the United States' first National Monument designated for an LGBT historic site.
