Widely regarded as one of the finest neo-gothic buildings in the U.S., the Scottish Rite Cathedral is the largest building in the world devoted to freemasonry. Indianapolis has one of the largest collections of buildings related to freemasonry, including the Murat Shrine, the Freemasons' Hall, and the Knights of Pythias Building, Scottish Rite Building, and the Masonic Temple, all demolished.

The Scottish Rite Cathedral has been the setting for various media productions, including the 1988 sports drama film "Eight Men Out" and Taylor Swift's "Change" music video in 2008.

The Scottish Rite Cathedral was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
