The second member of the Simon Lake Class of Submarine Tenders, USS Canopus commissioned into US Navy Service in 1965 and served with the US Atlantic Submarine Fleet until her 1994 decommissioning, after 29 years of service.
Following her decommissioning she and three other members of the Fort Eustis Reserve Fleet were sold for scrapping at Able UK in Teeside, England. However, after their arrival in the UK, public outcry over asbestos and lead paint in the ships has left all four ships sitting idle, awaiting the scrapper's torch.
