Abrenes 3 was built in the 1830s as a cholera hospital, but by the end of the 1800s it was being used as an army barracks. In the 1920s it was a refugee quarantine centre and hospital for those returning from Russia. Later, in the years leading up to World War II, the building and grounds were once again used by the army, this time as their medical headquarters. The Soviets also used it as an army barracks.
