Construction of Fort St. Frédéric began in 1734 by the French, who up until then had established a small settlement across the lake at Crown Point. During the French and Indian War (1754-1763) the British took control of the area and in 1759 British Major General Jeffrey Amherst Constructed the much larger Fort Crown Point.
