One of the three designated large hospitals for Glasgow (along with Gartnavel General and the New South Glasgow Hospital), GRI (or "The Royal" as most locals call it ) is one of the largest in Scotland with a history going back to 1794. The 20-acre campus consists of the "Old Building" - a rather forboding looking six-storey Edwardian structure designed by James Miller that was constructed in several stages between 1909 and 1924.
A grand plan was hatched in the 1970s to replace the old Miller buildings and start again from scratch, but in reality the closure of other hospitals in Glasgow and an overall strategy to try and consolidate as much into GRI as possible has seen it enjoy an indefinite stay of execution.
Sir Basil Spence won the commission to design the new building, construction of which began in 1974, and wasn't completed until 1980.
After this, the Princess Royal Maternity Block went up in 1998, followed by the Jubilee Building in 2001, which saw the original A&E department on Castle Street moved to the new complex.
