Spanning the Tonle Sap, the Chroy Chung Va Bridge carries National Route 6, the major trunk road to Kompong Cham and Siem Reap. The original bridge was blown up in 1973 either by (depending on who you believe) Lon Nol forces attempting to prevent the Khmer Rouge entering the city or by the Khmer Rouge forces advancing on the capital. For years the bridge was known as spean bak, "broken bridge," though many locals now refer to it as chuowa chuoul hauwy, "not broken anymore." Expats often call it the "Japanese Bridge," as it was rebuilt with funds from Japan in 1993.
