Tower Bridge (London)

United Kingdom / England / London
landmark, moveable bridge, road bridge, 1894_construction, Grade I Listed (UK), tourist attraction

Probably the most famous bridge in London, Tower Bridge was opened in 1894 to a design by Horace Jones with structural engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry. You can go up inside the bridge by taking the "Tower Bridge Experience". Highly Recommended to check when the Bridge is going to open next for a true London Experience.
The two parts in the middle of the bridge are raised cantileverly to allow small ships sailing down the Thames below (second pictuares). Initially, a steam-driven mechanism was used, and later a modern hydraulic system was introduced.

  • ppl must see that bridge, it is not as big as Golden Gate, but it has legendary and inspriation
  • How was that crass vandalism (Edit 20) funny?
  • In 1952 a crowded bus overran the "Stop" signs and began to cross one of the bascules (the two opening sections) just as they were opening. The bus leapt across the gap onto the other bascule and arrived safely on the other side.
  • isnt that bus thing a myth?
  • a place i want to see in my life time
