Devín (Hungarian: Dévény; German: Theben) is the most important part of Bratislava from the points of view of paleontology, archeology and history. The most ancient messages about "civitas dowina" come from the year 864. It was a crossroad of trading routes and in that time there was a hill-fort and a graveyard at the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. The trade village changed into a small town in the 11th-12th centuries. Devín lies near the Devín Gate (Hainburger Gate), which is a natural gate in the Danube valley and was viewed as the western gateway to the Kingdom of Hungary. It became part of Bratislava in 1946.
