One of the most unique buildings on campus architecturally, the Hantelman Building also honours a unique individual. Louis R. Hantelman, a farmer from the Roleau district, served as a CCF MLA for 10 years, was a member of the University's Board of Governors, and chair of the board of University Hospital. In 1955 the U of S awarded him with an honorary doctor of laws degree.

Hantelman appears to have been remarkably selfless. He served in World War I, reverting from the rank of captain to lieutenant so that he could remain with the men he had trained when they were sent to France. After the war, and for the rest of his life, he anonymously assisted many students financially, and in his will he left the University $500,000 to be used for agricultural research, agriculture scholarships, the humanities, and social sciences.

The Hantelman Building, designed by Izumi Arnott Sugiyama, was originally a residence for interns and is now used as a psychiatric centre. It was built between 1961-1963.
