Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport is a public airport six miles (10 km) east of downtown Amarillo, in Potter and Randall Counties, Texas, United States. The airport was renamed in 2003 after NASA astronaut and Amarillo native Rick Husband, who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in February of that year.

The airport was formerly Amarillo Air Force Base, which closed on December 31, 1968.

Comments

  • Also formerly Amarillo Air Force Base. Base admin area is just to the east of the airport.
  • These runways were originally built of B-52 bombers and are much thicker than normal airport runways.
  • They are also HEATED. During snowstorms, airports for hundreds of miles would be closed, but Amarillo was always open. :-D
