Opened 1977. Used for drama, comedy, opera, ballet, and pantomime performances, music concerts, exhibitions, conferences and as a cinema. 946 seats (theatre seating scheme) or 1484 seats (orchestral concert seating scheme). Maximum capacity: 1686 persons including those standing. The venue is within the compact town centre of Reading adjoining the western boundary with the inner distribution road, around the shopping centre and hotel areas between Oxford Road and Castle Street.

Its televised performances have included the one-frame Snooker Championships.

Asbestos scares mean this and civic centre face period inspections which could in the event of adverse air sample readings lead to demolition and rebuilding.
