Come and witness the three lives of the bunker starting with its role as an RAF ROTOR Station, then a brief period as a civil defence centre through to its most recent life as a Regional Government HQ. Designed for up to 600 military and civilian personnel, possibly even the Prime Minister, their collective task being to organise the survival of the population in the awful aftermath of a nuclear war.

  • I some how suspect that the people who were going to stay there would have died of food poisoning, long before the rest of us had died from radiation sickness. As a soldier in the 1980's, one of the tasks I assigned to carry out (along with loads of my colleagues) was to "exchange" the time expired food that was stockpiled in this bunker in readiness for it's occupation. We subsequently found out that the "time expired" stock pile was then being issued to soldiers as their exercise ration packs. Hence from 1983 onwards, we never actually exchanged the stock piled food in the bunker. We just collected the new food, drove to the bunker, sat around for a few hours, and then returned the new food to the stores returns department ready for issue to the soldiers in the field. In the 5 years that I was assigned this task, I never once changed the food inside the bunker.
