This is a Shivastalam in Nadu Naadu known primarily for its association with the attainment of sainthood by Sundaramoorthy Nayanar.
Meikkanda Devar the author of Sivagnanabodam is said to have lived here. We know the ''Pitha Pirai Sooda'' Thevara hymn of Sundarar is very popular but it is amazing to find the history behind it.
Sundarar was in his wedding attire ready for the related rituals at Tirunavalur. Suddenly, an old man intervened and claimed that Sundarar had been assigned to him as his attendant by his forefathers and proved his case. After verification of the signature in the document produced by the old man, the panchayat men asked Sundarar to go along with the old man as his servant. Sundarar in his fury, called the old man a lunatic (Pitha). The old man took Sundarar to Tiruvennainallur and disappeared at the sanctum sanctorum leaving His footwear (Padukas) at the entrance. Sundarar was shocked and came to realize that the old man who demanded his service was Lord Shiva. He cried apologetically and Lord asked him to sing His praise. When Sundarar asked how he could without any knowledge, Lord asked him to use Pitha (lunatic) as the first word and start singing.
The first song of Sundarar – "piththaa piRai Soodi.." – thus came into being.
The Padukas are still in the temple for the darshan of the devotees. What is noteworthy is the procedure followed in settling a dispute. Divine poet Sekkizhar in his Periapuranam describes the scene which is long and quite interesting and spiritually enjoyable. Heated arguments were exchanged between the old man-Lord Shiva and Sundarar. The judicial system in deciding a dispute should be under three main principles – Aatchi (tradition), Aavanam (documentary evidence) and Ayalar Kaatchi (eye witness). Lord Shiva won the case by producing a document signed by the ancestors of Sundarar as evidence to prove his claim.

  • Thaduthadkonda devar temple
  • There is village called maNam thavir(zh)thanallur near ThirunAvalur, where the marriage was to have taken place.
  • There were many other important events took place in the past at Thiruvennainallur. Manikkavachagar visited this village during second century B.C (Few will say it is during second century AD.) Kambar wrote Ramayanam here. Sadiyappa vallal helped Kambar while writing Ramayana. Kambar wrote poems praising Sadaiyappa vallal in Ramayana in gratidude. It seems that he lived at mettuth theruvu. Maikandar wrote his first poem (In Sivagnaana botham) in praise of Pollapillaiyaar. 'kalla nizhanmalai villaar aruliya pollaarinaimalar nallaar punaivare'. Once, this village was surrounded by pennaiyaar flood. villagers feard and worshipped goddess Mangalambikai. She appeared in one of the villager's dream and advised him to light a lamp with butter as fuel before worshipping her. Villagers did and flood receeded. Based on this incident, the village is called as Thiruvennai (Butter) nallur. Mahathma Gandhi visited this village and inagurated a school which is named as Gandhi Memorial High School.
  • All description of the reputation of Tiruvennai Nallur would be incomplete if we fail to recollect the life of and contribution of great philanthropist Sadayappa Vallal who was instrumental for the writing of Ramayana in Tamil by Kavi Chakravarthy Kambar. Kamba Ramayanam came into being with the support of Sadayappa Vallal whom Kambar has used in select episodes for some examples.
