Initially an 11th century timber stronghold, the subsequent stone castle was constructed in the 12th century by the Breton Lords. Even though remnants of this impressive structure remain, it is well worth noting Henry V was born in the upper quarters of the Great Tower. The Civil War left its mark on the tower via slighting, however, the Marquis of Worcester built a worthy replacement in the form of the castle house.
