Independence Park (Baton Rouge, Louisiana)

USA / Louisiana / Baton Rouge / Baton Rouge, Louisiana

One of the largest BREC parks,it was formerly the sight of the Baton Rouge's "Downtown Airport".In addition to the park it is the location of the Louisiana State Police training academy.
The Airport was opened in 1931 in what was then an undeveloped area of E.B.R.As time progressed the airfield became increasingly surrounded by development, both by commercial to the north and residential to the west, south, and east.In the early 70's Tara subdivision had been built and was under the approaches of runways 13 and residents complained. There was a fatal accident in the fall of 1975 involving a student pilot who stalled and crashed at the end of runway 13.The publicity from that caused the closure of the airfield in early 1976.In June of 1976 the old terminal building was demolished.
On July 4,1976(the Bicentinial) Downtown Airport was renamed Independence Park and dedicated by Mayor Dumas.
