Built in 1892, it is the oldest structure on the WSSU campus and houses the Winston-Salem State University Welcome Center and offices of the WSSU Foundation.

Named for Simon Green and Oleona Pegram Atkins, founders of WSSU, it was originally their home when they were the first family in the African-American community of Columbian Heights. After they moved out, it was used for various university offices and eventually gutted inside to make a rooming house. In 1979, the structure and several others in the area were placed on the National Register of Historic Properties. In 2000, the university received $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to restore the Simon Green Atkins House and in 2002, the house was moved from its original location to an area across from the Alumni Building, in order to make room for the Computer Science Facility on the West side of Martin Luther King Blvd.
