Between 1926-1928, Swiss hotelier Gerald Kraft combined two adjacent hotels, the Hotel Excelsior de la Ville and the Hotel Italie. The resulting 250-room Excelsior Hotel Italie was inaugurated in 1928. In 1958, ownership passed to CIGA, then in 1994 to Sheraton Hotels, and in 1998 to Starwood Hotels, when the property became a Westin.
