The Bird Conservation Center is located in Olinda. The center is operated by the Hawaii Endangered Bird Conservation Program, a part of the San Diego Zoo's Institute for Conservation Research. Originally constructed as a low-security prison, the center is now a successful bird propagation facility with two forest bird indoor areas, nene pens, and dedicated ‘alala aviaries

A similar facility, the Keauhou Bird Conservation Center, is located outside the town of Volcano on the Big Island.
