19th century sixteen-room mansion on the waterfront of Villefranche-sur-Mer in the Côte d'Azur region of southern France. In 1971, to avoid British taxes, the Rolling Stones chose to settle in Villa Nellcôte, which Keith Richards had rented. It was the "Gestapo headquarters during the Second World War," according to Richards, complete with swastikas on the floor vents. The Stones recorded their double album, Exile on Main Street here.
