Escalante Pueblo, based on tree ring studies, appears to have been constructed in 1129 A.D. It was probably a Chacoan outlier pueblo, part of the vast trading network with the people at Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. After a short abandonment the pueblo was reoccupied about A.D. 1150. A final occupation of very short duration occurred sometime around A.D. 1200. There are two kivas at the site. The Spanish explorers Escalante and Dominguez made note of this site in 1776 during their trek across the Southwest.
