Mouth of River Lea (London)

With a real lighthouse, this is an atmospheric spot, although not to everyone's taste. Here the ancient trading route up the Lea opens into the Thames. Roman barges brought grain to Londinium from Hertfordshire and further north. At times, this spot was the boundary between the Saxons and the Danelaw to the north and east. From the 17th century on, canals were dug to straighten the shipping route. Now the river ends in a dirty industrial estuary yet still a place more real than most of our modern city.
