Maine Maid Inn (Muttontown, New York)

USA / New York / Jericho / Muttontown, New York
 restaurant, interesting place, underground station

Originally built c. 1789 as a homestead for Timothy Tredwell and later owned by Valentine and Abigail Hicks, members of the very prominent Quaker family. It was once a stop on the Underground Railroad. There is a secret hallway in the cellar, and a secret set of steps in a linen closet. One recorded incident involving the Maine Maid Inn happened when a slave was working among freed blacks on the Hicks farm and a slave catcher came to reclaim him. Seeing the event as it was happening, Valentine Hicks opened his door and let the slave in, despite the risk of arrest for harboring a slave. The runaway was led upstairs to a linen closet with another staircase leading to the attic which was concealed by moveable shelves and a hinged door until the danger passed.

Charles and his son James Dolan met in the upstairs room of the Inn as they made plans to create Cablevision.
