Jeongdongjin (정동진)

Jeongdonjin is located in Gangwon-do (Gangwon province) and is small port and resort area well known for great views of the sunrise, popular with weekend tourists. Jeongdong means "the central east" and signifies that the site is located to the east of Hanyang, the capital where the king lived.

Jeongdongjin is in the Guinness Book of World Records as having the unique distinction of having a train station that is located the closest to the sea, in the world.

The New Millennium Hourglass is located in Jeongdongjin close to the shore and is a favorite gathering spot for New Years Eve revelers as this hourglass takes one full year for the sands to run to the bottom, the hourglass starts to rotate at 11:45PM to start the new year at midnight. The hourglass is adorned by symbols of the zodiac around the circumference of the face.

A stop at the Time Story Museum in Jeongdongjin is well worth the effort. This compact museum is filled with a wealth of ancient, esoteric and exotic time pieces.
