Nameri National Park is located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas in the Sonitpur District of Assam, India. It is 35kms away from Tezpur town. The scenic town of Bhalukpung lies near the western border of the park.
Originally set up as a wildlife sanctuary in 1985 with an area of 137 sq kms, a further 75 sq kms. was added and it was established as a National Park in 1998. An important park for tiger conservation, it is the second Project Tiger Reserve in Assam after Manas National Park.
Nameri shares its northeastern boundary with the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary of Arunachal Pradesh. Together they constitute an area of over 1000 sq.km of semi-evergreen, moist deciduous forests with cane and bamboo brakes and narrow strips of open grassland along rivers.
It is an ideal habitat for over 30 species of mammals including the Tiger, Leopard, Elephant, Bison, Sambar, Dhole (the Asiatic wild dog), Hog Deer, Barking Deer (Muntjac), Wild Boar, Sloth Bear, Himalayan Black Bear, Capped Langur, Indian Giant Squirrel etc., Nameri is a birder's paradise with over 315 species of birds - most notably the white winged wood duck, four distinct species of the Hornbill, Blue-bearded Bee-eaters, Babblers, Plovers etc.,
