On September 30, 2006, a group of twelve Chinese ambushed and killed 43 Tibetans in a group of 73 men women and children. The group was fleeing Tibet along the traditional trade route through Nangpa La Pass.

Among the dead was Kelsang Namtso, a seventeen year old Buddhist nun who was Leaving Tibet to join the Dalai Lama in exile.

The ambush was witnessed by two independent mountaineering expeditions who had established base camps at Cho Oyu nearby. Cho Oyu is about eight miles northwest of Mt. Everest.
