The vessels of the Cimarron Class were all constructed in the late 1970s as a 'trial' class of fast fleet replinshment oilers for deployment with nuclear and conventially powered battle groups. The lessons learned in the design and usage of this class led directly to the development and implementation of the Henry J. Kaiser Class of Fleet Replishment Oilers, which replaced all 4 members of the Cimarron Class in the late 1990s.
3 of the 4 member class are mothballed in the Suisun Bay Reserve fleet, awaitng reactivation, foriegn sale, or disposal through scrapping or live fire excercise.
