An archaeological site located southeast of the main settlement of ancient Akhetaten (Amarna). The complex dates to the 14th century BC and contained a number of shrines and pavilions, centered on the "Sunshade of Re" (šwt rʿ) temple, built by King Akhenaten for his Great Royal Wife, Nefernefruaten-Nefertiti, according to a royal proclamation recorded on several boundary stelae. Before detailed modern investigation under Barry Kemp, the archaeological site was erroneously believed to constitute a Roman military camp. In later times, a Coptic monastery was established at the site, using the ruins for building materials.
