Becontree (Dagenham)

United Kingdom / England / Chigwell / Dagenham
 district, draw only border

A surburban estate in Dagenham built during the 1920s/30s to house veterans. It has a population of over 100,000, making it the largest council house estate. It has its own tube station. The area was originally known as 'Beacontree', but transport companies changed a local bus station's name to 'Becontree Heath' to get it to fit on signs. This stuck as the name for the area when it was developed.

  • Beacontree is still pronounced the same even those transport people changed the spelling. I don’t know whether local people/authorities protest for it or not. This word pronounced as Bec+ontree. This gives a confusing idea to those who do not know about this area. I wish local authority change this soon to its correct form. Yes, this is the largest council area in the Europe. Not only for the soldiers, but mainly for the war widows, these estate was build. Another thing is this entire south west part of Essex was once known as Beacontree for thousands of years, covering nearby Ilford, Dagenham, Rainham, Barking, Goodmayes, etc. There were no Ilford, Dagenham etc. Ilford was once known as Hyleford, after the river Hyle, which is now known as river Roding. Later when new administrative areas were formed this area become a tiny suburb.
