Sampaloc is a district of Manila which is primarily a residential and educational center, bordered by Quiapo and San Miguel in the south, Santa Mesa in the south and east, Santa Cruz in the west and north, and Quezon City in the northeast.
Spanish era area called San Paloc over a period of american time the Spelling of place became Sampaloc and "Sampalok" is the native Tagalog dialect word for the tamarind fruit, perhaps because tamarind trees used to grow in this area.
The University Belt to name a few, the famous Dangwa flower market at Dimasalang Road, and the former colonial mansion, now called Windsor Inn, which is popular with backpackers and budget travelers. Nearby is the La Loma district of Quezon City, famous for its open-air roast pig restaurants.

There are 241 barangays in Sampaloc, from Brgy. 395 to 636. The first elected Manila Late Mayor Arsenio Lacson and the longest serving Late Mayor Ramon Bagatsing (Filipino-Indian), two of the city's legendary leaders, were both from the district of Sampaloc.
