George Merrick was the developer of Coral Gables. One of the earliest real estate developments, Mr. Merrick famously had William Jennings Bryan come and give speeches, to gather crowds to whom George could hawk lots. He would take prospective purchasers up in the Tower, where they could see the entire development and select their lot. He brought in actual gondoliers and gondolas from Venice, to take guests from the Biltmore Hotel to the beach. Mr. Merrick's widow Eunice Merrick was the great love of his life, and she outlived her husband by many decades, until the 1990's.
