The Pöllat Gorge
The Pöllat, a small mountain stream starting from above, from the Marie Bridge through small waterfalls runs down to the valley of Hohenschwangau by the Pöllat Gorge. It is a very popular tourist destination, especially on rainy days.
The gorge with its sheer rock walls has already been discovered in Maximillians II' days as a particularly attractive piece of nature. The Mary's bridge made first of wood was rebuilt by Ludwig II during the construction of Neuschwanstein Castle in the form of the current selfsupporting iron construction. The building of the new Mary's bridge was the first time when this completely new construction could be successfully tested. The iron carriers were mounted over the 90 meter deep Pöllat Gorge without any scaffolding. The railings are still the original ones.
