Crystal City

Crystal City is a complex of buildings bounded by US 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway) on the West and the railroad tracks on the East. It is in many ways a sub-city of its own, with commercial and residential towers linked by a series of underground tunnels, many sporting retail space. This wasn't by design, but the result of separate projects being linked over time. This makes the Crystal City underground rather byzantine and difficult to navigate. Work is currently under way to turn Crystal Drive--the main north-south street through Crystal City--into a more pedestrian friendly, urban environment, rather than a canal among office towers. Zula Dietrich wrote a book of remembrances about the area in the 1940s through the 1960s ( "Zula Remembers" www.loftpress.com )
