Presently known as Arlington's "most hip" neighborhood. Formerly Arlington's largest business area, known as Arlington's downtown. Several historic buildings (Dan Kain Building, Underwood Building, others) demonstrate the streamline moderne (art deco)architecture of the 1930's and 1940's that was predominant in Clarendon's heyday. Neighborhood deteriorated between 1950 and 1980 because of competition with suburban shopping malls. Revival began in 1980 with opening of Clarendon Metro Station on Orange Line.
