Seehamer See (Lake) is an artificial lake built to feed the Leitzach hydroelectric plant in the Mangfall Valley. When the electricity is needed the water is fed through a very large (12' diameter) cast-iron pipeline (the "Leitzachrohr") north to the hydroelectric plant in the valley. The water is stored in the three basins by the river, and during periods of low usage the turbine is reversed to send water back into the lake.
The entire Mangfall Valley is served by a network of small hydroelectric plants, most built in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
