Morton Salt Company (Chicago)One of a few remaining industrial sites along a now comercialized Elston Ave. A railroad spur track from the Union Pacific freight yard enters the facility and allows for bulk deliveries of salt via rail hopper cars. Deliveries seem to occur weekly. A single Union Pacific locomotive will pull/push several cars at a time in and out of the facility using the spur track. Sometimes the railworkers will lay flares on Elston as a warning. If traffic is busy, you might see a flagger. If traffic is dead, you will see the locomotive slowly pull into the street and then sprint across during gaps in auto traffic. Should you be in the area when a delivery is made, take time out and observe a dying part of Chicago's industrial heritage. Remember, even in modern Chicago, there are still places where people do 'real work' for a living.
