Lockheed Martin (Formerly Martin Marietta) purchased 12 square miles around the 1950s and built the sandlake complex which includes offices, warehousing, disposal sites & factory. Later developed the surrounding land via its direct subsidy "Orlando Central Park", much of it as industrial but later developed the tourist district known as International Drive or at the time "Plaza International" that included hotels, retail, resorts. The company also donated the land needed for the Orange County Convention Center.
