The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is the US government agency responsible for all civilian nuclear reactors (licensing, oversight, and safety) and for civilian use of radioactive materials, including reactor fuel and waste. Before 1975, the job of the NRC was carried out by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).
