Why is it called Mexico Square? Is/Were there a Mexican Embassy near by? I have always been wondering about this.

Mexico Square is named after Mexico, because Mexico was among the very few countries in the world that disapproved the Italian Invasion on Ethiopia. Actually, in Mexico City there was a "Plaza Etiopía" or Ethiopia Square, which is no longer extant, sistering Mexico Square in Addis Ababa. However, instead of the former Plaza Etiopía now there is a subway station, called Estación Etiopía, or Ethiopia Station, in that place (the station logo is the Lion of Judah). You can see pictures from such subway station, here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_Etiop%C3%ADa

One other reason is because when the majority of nations didn't want to grant Ethiopia membership to the league of nations(the rest of Africa were European colonies)Mexico was the one that stood up and said Ethiopia had a right to join just like anyone else.
