industrial area, oil refinery

The Ferndale refinery is located on Puget Sound in Ferndale, Wash., about 20 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border and has a crude oil capacity of 96 thousand barrels per day (MBD). The refinery processes primarily light, low-sulfur crude oil. Ferndale operates a deepwater dock that is capable of accommodating tankers bringing Alaskan North Slope crude oil from Valdez, Alaska. The refinery also receives Canadian crude oil via pipeline. The refinery produces transportation fuels, such as gasoline and diesel fuel. Other products include residual fuel oil supplying the northwest marine transportation market. Most refined products are distributed by pipeline and barge to major markets in the northwest United States.
