The first monument to a scientist established in the Soviet Union (on November, 4th, 1923). The sculptor was S.D.Merkurov, and the architect, D.I.Osipov.

The scientist is represented in the cloak of an honorary member of Cambridge University. On the granite pedestal is carved the "curve of physiology of plants" that Timiryazev developed.

In October, 1941 the sculpture was overturned by a blast wave from a Nazi bomb. In some hours it was reestablished in its former place, but on the bottom part traces from the damage remain visible today.
