The refineries are considered to be among the most sensitive sites in Ashdod and contain tons of dangerous materials that, should they have leaked due to a more direct hit, could have killed or injured hundreds of people.
Ashdod Oil Refinery is second largest Oil Refinery in Israel, after Haifa Oil Refineries Ltd, located in coastal city of Ashdod. It was once part of governmental company Oil Refineries Ltd. After privatization of the company and solution to break the monopoly in Oil Refinery field, Ashdod oil refinery was sold to Paz Oil Company Ltd. and became it subdivision under the name Paz Ashdod Refinery Ltd.
