village, White Towns of Andalusia
One of the Pueblos Blancos villages of Malaga and Cadiz, Montejaque has a population of about 1000, and dates to the berber conquest of Iberia. It was one of the fortified frontier villages separating Muslim Spain from Christian Spain in the 1300s. The Plaza Constitution is the main cultural center of the village, this is also the location of the Church of Santiago El Mayor. Above the village, on the old Ronda-Montejaque road is a small chapel, the Hermita de las Escariguelas.
